CCMB Invests in the SOLiD™ System, the World's Premier High-Throughput Sequencing Platform from Applied BiosystemsMay 2008
Dr. Lalji Singh, Director - CCMB, Hyderabad and his scientific group recently made the decision to purchase the SOLiD™ System! CCMB plans to use the SOLiD System primarily for applications like Whole Genome Sequencing, Targeted Re-sequencing and ChIP analysis. CCMB also has a keen desire to leverage the capabilities of the SOLiD platform for miRNA discovery and Gene Expression studies which will be explored by other research groups in CCMB working in these areas. Setting the standard in next-generation technology, the SOLiD System is the only platform to provide the accuracy, throughput and scalability required to enable exciting new applications beyond the boundaries of traditional genetic analysis. The Applied Biosystems SOLiD™ System sets the standard in next generation sequence analysis. This technology, based on sequential ligation with dye-labeled oligonucleotides, enables massively parallel sequencing of clonally amplified DNA fragments.

Labindia Wins Order from the Indian Government for 10 StepOne™ Instruments for Avian Influenza Surveillance ProjectApril 2008
The Indian government's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently placed an order for 10 StepOne units with Labindia. The purchase of these instruments is being funded by the International Development Association (an arm of the World Bank) towards developing an Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP) in India. The stated purpose of IDSP is to enable surveillance of Avian Influenza (AI) across India. The project provides for purchasing instrumentation and other costs for performing AI surveillance in 10 centers across India. This project is of significant important since outbreaks of AI in India are becoming more common. Real-time PCR systems from AB are already installed at India's two main pathogen testing centers, namely, National Institute of Virology - Microbial Containment Complex at Pune and Kings Institute, Chennai. However, both these centers are currently overwhelmed with samples from all over India. The IDSP will go a long way in helping alleviate this situation.

Labindia and Applied Biosystems Donate Sequencing Equipment to the Genome FoundationFebruary 2008
HYDERABAD, India February 1, 2008
Labindia Instruments Pvt Ltd and Applied Biosystems have donated DNA sequencing equipment to the Genome Foundation to help the organization achieve its goal of reducing suffering from genetic diseases.
The Genome Foundation proposes to reduce the burden of genetic disorders in India by providing diagnostic services such as molecular diagnosis, carrier analysis, prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling, for various genetic diseases such as hemoglobinopathies, muscular dystrophy, neurodegenerative diseases, mental retardation syndromes, bleeding disorders and mitochondrial disorders, chromosomal analysis for recurrent abortions and male and female sterility and DNA profiling for related services.
“We hope that findings from our studies will eventually help to prevent the spread of debilitating genetic disorders that are rampant throughout India,” said Dr Lalji Singh, Managing Director, Founder Member, Genome Foundation and Director, CCMB. “We are very greatful to Applied Biosystems and Labindia for their generous offer as it would not otherwise have been possible for the Foundation to acquire this vital piece of equipment at the beginning of its establishment.”
The 3730xl Genetic Analyzer donated by Applied Biosystems and Labindia will play an essential role in the project by making it possible to sequence each individual's genome, and detect any DNA mutations that might be linked to diseases.
“Our partnership with Labindia and the Genome Foundation creates an infrastructure whereby researchers can build their understanding of many diseases,” said Mark Stevenson, President of Applied Biosystems. “Applied Biosystems is proud to be able to assist with this noble cause and we are hopeful that this first step will help the Genome Foundation to achieve its goals.”

Leica Microsystems enlarges product portfolio for EM Sample Preparation through the BAL-TEC acquisitionFebruary 2008
Leica Microsystems (Wetzlar) has expanded its Electron Microscopy (“EM”) sample preparation business by making another company acquisition. On February 15, 2008, the optical company bought Bal-Tec AG based in Liechtenstein. Bal-Tec AG develops, produces and sells instruments for sample preparation in scanning electron microscopy which is an excellent match for the Leica range of transmission microscopy products. Both technologies are used for preparing biological, medical and industrial materials samples.
Leica Microsystems will manage the new product group from its Ultramicrotomy site in Vienna. Together with its other EM sample preparation products, Leica Microsystems now has the world’s most comprehensive product portfolio. Covering a broad range of applications, Leica Microsystems is the only supplier able to cover the entire sample preparation process in the electron microscopy laboratory for both biological and materials preparation. “Electron microscopy sample preparation has an exciting future. Leica Microsystems was already a leader in key segments of the EM sample preparation market and now, with the acquisition of Bal-Tec AG, is consolidating its technological lead and extending its portfolio, offering high-quality products and excellent customer service,” declares Stefan David, Manager of Leica Microsystems in Vienna.

Applied Biosystems releases SOLiD:
Next Generation Sequencing Platform
July 2007
The Applied Biosystems' SOLiD™ System is a revolutionary genetic analysis platform that enables massively parallel sequencing of clonally amplified DNA fragments linked to magnetic beads. The sequencing methodology is based on sequential ligation with dye-labeled oligonucleotides. Sequencing by ligation offers higher accuracy and greater throughput. Technology The SOLiD™ System is based on Sequencing by Ligation. In this method, the DNA sequence is generated by measuring the serial ligation of an oligonucleotide by ligase. All fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide probes are present simultaneously and compete for incorporation. After each ligation, the fluorescence signal is measured and then cleaved before another round of ligation takes place. Use of a reset phase allows a reduction in noise and a capping step prevents dephasing.
